Dinghy Sailing finishes 1st at Anteater Open

Keelhaulers top a 16-team field at the Anteater open, leading from start to finish.

The 16 teams visited sunny Newport Beach, Calif. last weekend for two days of good racing. Very shifty light breeze in the morning meant for a postponement until the wind settled into an eight-knot westerly. Consistent and decent breeze allowed a total of six races to be had for each division. Moorings caused unpredictable and shifty conditions that made for a challenging, albeit short race course that the teams navigated well. Cal Maritime led the first day with Berkeley and San Diego close on their tale. A strong current meant no recalls the entire day.

Sunday began with no wind calling for an on-shore postponement lasting until 11:30 a.m. when the wind built to a light three knots from the South. Unpredictable conditions made for a challenging course placement but the teams handled it well. Each division got in three races for a total of nine races completed. Multiple recalls were called before Cal Maritime pulled away for a convincing a victory.

UP NEXT: Cal Maritime will sail at the South Designate in Long Beach, Calif. from March 23-24.
