Offshore Sailing completes Transpac Race
The Keelhaulers finished the Transpacific Race in just under eight days in their first entry into the race since 1995. Cal Maritime was the only college sailing team participating in the 50th running of the Transpac Race.
Cal Maritime's amateur, student crew (Corinthian) racing in their Andrews 77, had an elapsed time of 7:23:36:03. Cal Maritime came in extremely well prepared for the race from a safety standpoint with a lot of training hours.
The Keelhaulers had a small taste of what life on their 77-foot yacht would be like for days at a time with an abridged run in the Cabo race during spring break, before returning home to get the students back in time for classes to resume.
Though this was a first for the Cal Maritime sailors to be on a sail boat for that long, it was well worth it for the Keelhaulers to participate in the Transpac Race, with a ton of support from the sailing community and equipment manufactures.
Cal Maritime was in a group of boats that launched on Saturday, July 13 and they all ran into a serious lack of wind that night leaving the teams drifting for a bit off of the coast of Southern California before getting into a good breeze on Sunday morning.
