Cal Maritime opens season with 3rd-place finish in Shields Trophy Regatta
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Cal Maritime sailing team started the 2021-22 campaign with a podium finish with its third-place performance at the Shields Trophy Regatta on Chesapeake Bay. Hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, the 10-team event featured maritime and service academies from across the country.
Host Navy took home the top prize with a stellar Sunday, winning all three races to finish with a total of five points (2,1,1,1) The Keelhaulers tallied 15 points (1,2,5,7) and were edged by a point for second place by the University of Rhode Island (14 points, 4,3,2,5).
After a three-hour postponement on Saturday, the enough breeze filled in and the Keelhaulers got off to a fast start. Cal Maritime nailed the layline to lead by 200 yards at the weather mark, extended its comfortable lead, and took the opening race. With no time to start a second race that afternoon, the Keelhaulers held the overnight lead.
