VALLEJO, Calif. – A busy weekend is in store for Cal Maritime Sailing since it will split up to compete on both coasts this weekend. In addition to visiting Annapolis, Maryland, to participate in the Kennedy Cup, Keelhauler cadet-athletes will also travel to Santa Barbara for the Gaucho Team Race.

The Keelhaulers are coming off an impressive performance at the UCSD Open where they defeated 10 Division I teams. With the varsity boats placing third and eighth, and the JV squad finishing second among the 26 participating teams, Cal Maritime has three top-three finishes in its four races this season.

At the Kennedy Cup, Cal Maritime will sail on Navy 44 MK2 Sloops provided by the Naval Academy. Teams will sail with a crew of eight that will rotate boats between Saturday and Sunday.

Following Friday's open practice, First Warning is slated for 12 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday. The highest finishing team will receive an invitation from the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association of North America to compete at the Student Yachting World Cup in France.

The Kennedy Cup's 10-team field includes Cal Maritime, College of Charleston, Massachusetts Maritime, Michigan, Navy, Rhode Island, SUNY Maritime, Toledo, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and UC San Diego.

The first warning signal for the Gaucho Team Race is slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. In addition to Cal Maritime and UC Santa Barbara, the event's host, Cal Poly and Stanford will send teams to Southern California.

A triple round robin format will take place with teams rotating boats after each round, or the beginning of a new day. A fleet of 18 CFJ's will be used for the event.
