Sailing names team captains for the 2022-23 season

VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime sailing named its new set of team captains, as announced by Head Sailing Coach Tom Tucker on Thursday. Earning these highly coveted leadership positions were Kyle Collins (Team Captain), Cooper Smith (Offshore Captain), Maddy Rivera and Charles Bedford (Dinghy Co-Captains).

Collins and Rivera will enter the 2022-23 campaign as seniors; Smith and Bedford will return to campus for the fall semester as juniors.

The quartet will lead a program that enjoyed one of the most successful years in program history — the first season of competition since COVID brought an abrupt end to the 2019-20 campaign and forced the Keelhaulers to cancel all regattas in 2020-21.

Highlighted by its come-from-behind victory at the Kennedy Cup last fall and a successful defense of its Harbor Cup title, Cal Maritime also celebrated championship-winning performances at the Cal Team Race and Rainier Cup. In Berkeley, the Keelhaulers were the only team to post an undefeated record for the weekend by winning all six head-to-head battles; the academic year concluded with another dinghy championship when Cal Maritime posted bullets in 10 of 12 races.

In all, the Keelhaulers recorded 11 top-three results out of the 18 regattas that took place throughout the 2021-22 academic year.
