Challenging conditions create condensed Kennedy Cup
Final Results
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Facing an opportunity to become just the second school in Kennedy Cup history to three-peat, the two-time defending champions enjoyed the best start to its weekend by winning the first race of this nationally-renowned regatta, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Due to dismal winds throughout the opening day of competition, that was only one of two races that took place throughout the day as Cal Maritime returned to the docks in second place with six team points, two more than Wisconsin.
Poor winds continued throughout Sunday, which forced race officials to move locations around the Chesapeake twice before finding a location that allowed one race to take place 40 minutes before the race start deadline of 2 p.m. By winning the lone race of the day, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy finished the weekend in first place with nine team points.
By ending the regatta with 14 points, Cal Maritime tied for fourth with Maine Maritime and Webb Institute; by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker, the Keelhaulers ended the regatta in sixth place, two points behind a Wisconsin team that capture third and three points behind second place Wisconsin.
Even though Mother Nature prevented Cal Maritime from enjoying a historical achievement — Navy remains the only institution to wih three Kennedy Cup titles in a row, a feat accomplished twice in regatta history — Cal Maritime still earned a place in the regatta's records book as the the sixth school to capture back-to-back titles by winning the John F. Kennedy Memorial Trophy in 2021 and 2022.
The Keelhaulers will return to action next weekend when their dinghy cadet-athletes head to Santa Barbara for the PCCSC Fall Championship.
