Keelhaulers Drop a Close Contest
The California Maritime Academy women's basketball team stepped out of conference play to take on the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz on Thursday night. In a back and forth affair, the Keelhaulers would take a 1 point advantage into the half at 30-29. In the second half, neither team could muster more than a 5 point lead. In the end UC Santa Cruz out battled the Keelhaulers to take the win, 66-64. The Banana Slugs were lead by Sarah Mackey and Leah Parrish both with 14 points. The Keelhaulers were lead by Alexsis Brown's 25 points and 10 rebounds and Kelly Stephens 13 points.
With the loss, Cal Maritime moves their overall record to 11-11. However, they remain undefeated in Cal Pac conference play and stand a full game ahead of second place Menlo College. The Keelhaulers return to conference play on Saturday at 6:30pm to start the 2nd round of conference versus Pacific Union College. In the first meeting between the two teams, Cal Maritime earned a seven point (76-69) victory.
Saturday's game will also be the Coaches vs. Cancer event. Donations will be collected instead of admission. All donations will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Come out and cheer on the Keelhaulers as they face Pacific Union and both teams lead the fight against cancer!
