Keelhaulers Win a Thriller!
If there was any doubt who the most dominating player in the Cal Pac Conference was before tonight's game, Cal Maritime's Alexsis Brown erased all thoughts with a dominating 55 point, 19 rebound performance in a thrilling 104-97 victory over visiting Holy Names in the Cal Pac semi-final. As impressive as her overall point total is, what might have been even more impressive is that Brown scored 44 points after half time. With the win, the Keelhaulers advance to the conference championship against Menlo College on Monday night. The winner of Monday's contest advances to the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.
While Brown carried the Keelhaulers for most of the night, she also had some help from her friends in the form of seniors Kelly Stephens and Sabrina Domingo. Stephens finished with 15 points including a clutch three pointer with under a minute to play that stretched Cal Maritime's lead to six. Dominigo's consistency was key throughout the night as she finished with 17 points and had 3 assists and no turnovers.
The win was significant in many ways including the fact that Cal Maritime avenged a blowout loss to the Hawks from Holy Names less than a month ago. Head Coach Dave Covell commented that it was the team's togetherness that proved to be the difference, "We could have gone away tonight when they stretched out their lead. We could have packed it in the last two weeks when we were struggling. Fortunately, these girls showed their resiliency and ability to stand by one another tonight. This is a win that everyone in the gym tonight will always remember. I am so happy our team was able to experience it!"
