Shooting Star Joins the Keelhauler Basketball Family
California Maritime Academy Women's Basketball Head Coach, Tony Jones has announced the signing of Amber Herrly for the 2015-2016 season.
Herrly comes to the Keelhaulers from Mt. San Antonio College, one of the most successful junior colleges in the state and country. Herrly, a scoring threat with almost unlimited distance, joins the Cal Maritime family after playing a pivotal reserve role with the Mt. S.A.C. Mounties. Amber helped guide the team to back-to-back CCCAA Women's Basketball State Championship game appearances. As a sophomore, Herrly averaged 9 points in 12 minutes per game. Herrly earned Second Team All-Conference Honors while competing in the South Coast Conference-North Division and she earned the Mt. S.A.C. Scholar Athlete Award. Amber will be majoring in International Business and Logistics starting in the Fall.
"We are so very pleased to have a player of Amber's caliber join the Keelhauler family! She has such a high basketball I.Q., coupled with her unselfishness and even demeanor; she is absolutely deadly on the court. She does a little bit of everything and she's a threat to score as soon as she crosses half court. A weapon like that from a high profile program is such a sought after thing, especially at our level. We think that Amber has such a bright future in our program. She shoots the ball effortlessly and plays with such a focus, she's really fun to watch play. Amber is a self-driven individual that works to stay ahead of the curve. She is the kind of player coach's wish for, being competitive on the floor and aggressive in the classroom. Amber is one of the ones you don't have to worry about," commented Coach Jones when asked about Herrly's commitment.
When asked about why she chose Maritime Herrly said, "I chose Cal Maritime because one, I wanted a new and different experience with life in general. Two, the campus is absolutely beautiful and so is the city. Three, Coach T just made me feel so welcomed and wanted at the same time. That feeling is just something I do not feel very often."
Amber Herrly joins a Cal Maritime Women's Basketball Team that is fresh off of its most successful season in school history. The 2014-15 Keelhauler squad captured its first ever winning season in school history, a second place conference finish and finishing just shy of qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament.
The Keelhaulers open their season on the road on October 30th against the Bethesda Flames.
