Basketball Teams Begin Postseason Play

After completing the regular season by capturing the California Pacific Conference championship, the California Maritime Academy men's basketball team sets its sights on the postseason. By virtue of winning the regular season, the Keelhaulers have earned the #1 seed in the conference tournament and will host the Bobcats of UC Merced on Saturday night at Cal Maritime. Game time is set for 5:30pm. Cal Maritime and UC Merced played this past Sunday with the Keelhaulers winning 71-46 on Senior Night.

"Our guys are extremely excited for the post season. This has been a resilient group and we are looking forward to a tremendous week of practice in preparation for a very tough opponent. Coach Pham and his staff do an excellent job and we will need to play well," remarked Head Coach Bryan Rooney.

On the women's side, the Keelhaulers earned the #2 seed with a strong finish to the season. Cal Maritime will take on Simpson University on Sunday at 4pm. The game will also take place at Cal Maritime. During the regular season, each team won on the opponent's home floor setting up what should be a tremendous semifinal.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Tony Jones commented, "The girls are very excited about the conference tournament this week. We are all pleased with the level of basketball they have been playing lately, and they are preparing for the next game with focus and hard work. They are working towards being the first Keelhauler Women's Basketball Team to win the conference tournament in our brief program history. They just want to make their mark and say that they did it. They were the first. They did something special to mark the building of our Women's Basketball Program. They can be a pretty determined bunch when they set their collective minds on a goal."

The tournament runs Saturday, Feb. 27 through Tuesday, March 1 at California Maritime.
