Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to PUC
The Cal Maritime women's basketball team lost a 62-59 heartbreaker to visiting Pacific Union in California Pacific Conference play.
At one point the Lady Keelhaulers had an 11-point lead in the first quarter, and still took a one-point lead into the half. But turnovers would again be their undoing, as they committed 29 of them on the night.
Cal Maritime was up 57-54 with three minutes left to play, but committed three straight offensive fouls. Senior Alisia Spearman missed a three pointer, and then committed a foul. Senior Lilian Dawkins missed a three, and junior Samantha James committed an offensive foul. Then junior Nneka Anyaoha was called for a moving screen with 1:43 left.
The game was tied at 59-59 when James lost the handle with six seconds left for the Lady Keelhaulers final turnover of the night. PUC hit a three pointer from the wing to go up by three with just over three seconds, which led to senior Luisa De Los Reyes firing a half-court shot that was dead on, but hit the front of the rim.
James scored 12 points and Spearman finished with 12 points, four three-pointers and six boards. Anyaoha had a team-high 11 rebounds and De Los Reyes had nine points and five assists.
Maritime shot 39.7 percent from the field.
