Lady Keelhauler's offense struggles in road loss

William Jessup jumped out to a 10-point lead early against Cal Maritime and the Keelhaulers couldn't put together a comeback falling 69-45 to the Warriors.

Cal Maritime (6-5) trail 17-4 early on when sophomore Kameron Taylor hit a corner three to get the Keelhaulers back to within 10, and after one quarter of play they trailed 24-14. The Warriors (12-2) were already 4 of 7 from three-point range at that point and had eight points off of Keelhauler turnovers.

The second quarter started wtih senior Samantha James hitting a three pointer from the wing after some great ball movement by the Keelhaulers to cut it to a 24-17 deficit. But Cal Maritime would have back-to-back shot clock violations shortly after that and trailed 31-17 with 4:48 to go in the half.

That's when the Keelhaulers tried to turn up the defensive pressure and trap the Warriors, but the William Jessup was able to find the open shooters and increase their lead to 37-17 as they were 7-12 from downtown with just under three minutes to go in the half.

Jessup would hit one more three pointer to take a 40-17 lead at the break. The Keelhaulers shot just 21% in the first half while the Warriors shot 47% and won the rebound battle 25-16.

Things didn't improve much in the third quarter as Jessup extended their lead to 56-23 after three quarters of play, with the Warriors improving their rebounding advantage to 33-22 and were 10 of 11 from the free throw line while the Keelhaulers were just 1 for 2.

Cal Maritime would win the fourth quarter 22-13 as freshman Tal Webb hit three three-pointers and finished 3 for 4 from the free-throw line to give her 14 points on the night. James finished 3 of 6 from the field for seven points, and senior Miryam Jimenez went 3 for 4 from the field to finish with six points.

Junior point guard Valiceia Horne led the team with four assists and five rebounds, with senior Katherine Freitas pulling down five boards as well. Taylor led Cal Maritime with three steals. The Keelhaulers did finish the night shooting 75% from the free throw line, but shot just 29% from the field to Jessup's 42%.
