Women's Basketball beaten by #9 Antelope Valley

Lady Keelhaulers (6-6, 0-2) commit 30 turnovers in 92-64 loss to the UAV Pioneers (11-3, 2-0).

Cal Maritime battled in the first quarter, even taking the lead twice and tying the score three times. The Keelhaulers were down 10-7 when Katherine Freitas hit a corner three to tie at 10-10, but that's when the Pioneers would begin to pull away.

UAV is known for firing up a lot of three pointers and true to form they put up almost double the amount the Keelhaulers did. The long rebounds off of those threes went UAV's way early on collecting some fortuitous bounces, though the top-10 Pioneers certainly did earn a large portion of those boards too as they are great at floor spacing and capitalizing on scrambles for loose balls.

After beating the Keelhaulers to those 50-50 balls a shooter would be open on the perimeter allowing the Pioneers a quality look at a three pointer. But for all the things UAV did right, they also capitalized on the Keelhaulers mistakes. Turnovers would prove to be Cal Maritime's undoing against the Pioneers press along with allowing to many free passes to the basket via defensive miscommunications.

All of that would lead to a 29-9 run in 2nd quarter for UAV that put the game out of reach for the Keelhaulers. The Cal Maritime Women came out of the halftime break playing much better basketball, winning the third quarter 21-16, but the deficit was just too insurmountable at that point.

Three Keelhaulers finished the night in double figures in scoring, with Freitas leading the way with 15 points by going 3 of 6 from downtown along with a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman Tal Webb added 13 points and senior Samantha James scored 12 points on the night. Cal Maritime only lost the rebound battle by four, shot 44% on the night, and made 67% of their free throws, but it was the 30 turnovers to just 13 for UAV that was the difference.

UP NEXT: The Lady Keelhaulers will take on La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif. at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 10.
