Lady Keelhaulers can't close gap at Simpson
The Lady Keelhaulers struggled at Simpson University Saturday night in a 64-39 loss. They shot just 29% from the field on the night and were only 1 of 19 from three-point range including seven air balls.
Cal Maritime trailed just 15-7 after one quarter of play, and a Kameron Taylor three pointer cut it to a three-point deficit with just over five minutes left in the first half. But every time Cal Maritime would threaten to tie, they would commit a costly turnover with 16 of them in the first half alone.
A Katherine Freitas jumper started the scoring for Cal maritime on their first possession of the second half. Then Miryam Jimenez forced a turnover and Samantha James hit a turnaround jumper in the lane to cut it four, but two straight threes for Simpson pushed their lead up to 10 just a minute and a half into the second half.
James was the keelhaulers best offensive player on the night, especially in the 3rd quarter, trying to keep the Lady Keelhaulers in it with a variety of baskets in the lane and outside jumpers. She finished with 18 points on 7 of 15 shooting along with seven rebounds.
But Cal Maritime was never able to recover from that 10-point lead in the third quarter and it would only snowball on them from there in the 64-39 loss.
