Women's Basketball adds depth, rebounding with local recruits
Elizabeth Martinez of Vallejo, Calif. and Stella Havea of Castro Valley, Calif. signed letters of intent with Cal Maritime after playing their previous two seasons at Solano Community College.
Martinez played her high school basketball at Jesse Bethel high in Vallejo, and the five-foot-eleven center was the Jaguars leading rebounder in her junior and senior seasons, pulling down 112 boards as a senior.
The Vallejo native was named the Bethel High Girl's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year in her sophomore and junior seasons and would like to become a minister when her playing days are over.
In her freshman year at Solano College she averaged 6.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and one steal per game, and as a sophomore she improved to 5.6 rebounds per game and shot 61% from the free-throw line which was a 14% jump from her junior year.
Havea was born in Oakland, Calf. before playing her high school ball at Castro Valley High where she shot 59% from the field as a senior. The five-foot-eight, guard-forward combo shot 56% from the field as a freshman and 49% as a sophomore. She was an honor roll student at Castro Valley High and wants to pursue a career in law enforcement.
"We are excited to add Stella and Liz to our Keelhauler family," Head Coach Dennis Cox said. "They have developed and honed their skills in a great program at Solano College, for which we can only benefit. Stella will provide strength, experience, and a nice mid-range game to our post arsenal and Liz is a tremendous athlete with a lot of versatility on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court."
