Women's Basketball can't complete sweep of PUC

Cal Maritime's Women's Baksetball team lost Thursday night on the road in Angwin, Calif. against the Pacific Union Pioneers 58-45.

Down their top scorer in Kameron Taylor, the Lady Keelhaulers had trouble finding their offensive rhythm for majority of the game being hesitant with their shot selection, resulting in a look of uncomfortableness from Cal Maritime all game.

Tyra Fai'Malo and Elizabeth Martinez looked to start something in the beginning, giving them an early 6-2 lead. But the Pioneers would catch fire due in large part from their freshman guard Olivia Crigler, ending the first quarter on 13-2 run and giving the Pioneers the lead after the first quarter 15-8.

The Pioneers would carry the momentum into the second, leading by as much as 14 at one point. The Keelhaulers would end the half stronger however, going on a 9-0 run making it 27-22 Pioneers at the half.

The Pioneers would control the game the rest of the way, hitting their outside shots and plugging the gaps on defense as the Keelhaulers were unable to cut the deficit down to less than five, losing 58-45 on the road and giving the Pioneers their first win on the season.

Elizabeth Martinez had another strong performance for Cal Maritime leading the team in scoring with 13 points and three rebounds with Apollonia Ilalio right behind her with 11 points, marking two straight double digit performances for both. Senior Valecia Horne and freshman Alicia Porter tied for a team high six rebounds. The Keelhaulers shot just 28% from the field and 5-19 from three-point.

UP NEXT: Cal Maritime (4-21, 2-9) will finish the season at home with three straight home games with their first of the three being this Saturday, Feb 15, at 5:30 pm against UC Merced (13-11, 7-4) in Vallejo.
