VALLEJO, Calif. – The Denise Bennett era at Cal Maritime will officially commence this week when women's basketball heads to Rocklin to compete in the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic. The Keelhaulers' schedule begins with Friday night's matchup versus Oakland-based Lincoln University and continues the following day against the Oregon Tech Owls.

A video stream and live stats are available for both games by clicking on respective links.

For Cal Maritime, this season-opening tournament marks the first official event since February 22, 2020, since last season was canceled due to COVID-19.

This year's team skews young with guard/forward Kaylee Berry leading the way since she is the only senior on roster. Combined with junior Alicia Porter, the pair are Keelhaulers' lone upperclassmen.

With six sophomores and a freshman completing Coach Bennett's inaugural team, each non-conference game serves as opportunities to strengthen team chemistry and gain valuable experience before Cal Pac play begins in January.

"We are a young team that is excited to play 5-on-5 basketball competitively for the first time in more than a year. Everyone cannot wait for this weekend's games since it allows them to enjoy their passion," said Bennett.

Since Oregon Tech on Cal Maritime's tournament schedule, the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic will provide a unique luxury to the coaching staff and players.

"When we play Oregon Tech (Saturday's opponent) again in December at home, we can use those games to measure the team's growth."

Bennett added, "more than anything, the players are thrilled to know that a season of competitive basketball will take place, starting this weekend."
