VALLEJO, Calif. – Following its season-opening six-game homestand, women's basketball will hit the road for the first time this season, albeit for a short distance, since it is heading to Angwin to face the Pacific Union Pioneers in Thursday night's Cal Pac rivalry contest. Tipoff inside Covered Wagon is slated for 6 p.m. — 30 minutes later than the Keelhaulers' usual 5:30 p.m. league start time since Pacific Union College is a Seventh-day Adventist learning community.
The Pioneers will square off against the Keelhaulers in the last of their three-game homestand before playing their next seven straight on the road. Cal Maritime will face a similar situation since its upcoming schedule is road-heavy: After traveling to Angwin, the team will not return to action until December 28, when it hosts UC Merced at 5:30 p.m. — the final game before the Keelhaulers' season-long six-game road swing commences December 31 at Simpson.
As Cal Maritime's travel partner, Pacific Union also hosted Saint Katherine and Westcliff last weekend throughout the inaugural week of Cal Pac action and suffered similar results by dropping both contests.
Women's basketball fans with outstanding memories remember the team's historic last visit to Angwin since that is when Alicia Porter finished with an attention-grabbing double-double of 43 points and 26 rebounds, new career highs in each category. Her 26 boards are the Cal Pac's all-time single-game record; she is also responsible for the fourth-highest single-game points total in league history.
Based on last year's performance, in a game Cal Maritime won 71-58, Porter earned NAIA National Player of the Week and Cal Pac Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors.
Entering this year's road rivalry game, Porter leads the league in scoring (27.3 ppg), more than six points per game higher than the Cal Pac's second-ranked player, and is No. 2 in rebounds (12.5 rpg), trailing the league's leader by a margin of 0.4.
