VALLEJO, Calif. – Women's basketball's (almost) three-week-long break from competition will conclude on Wednesday, December 28, when it returns to competition inside PEAC Main Gym by hosting UC Merced in a 5:30 p.m. Cal Pac conference matchup.
The Keelhaulers will return to league play following its one-point victory at Pacific Union, which took place in Angwin on December 8, a week filled with papers and exams, and time spent at home for the holidays.
When Cal Maritime tips-off against the Bobcats, that game is the last at home for the 2022 calendar year since the team will open a season-long six-game road swing three days later at Simpson.
Please note the 4:30 p.m. start time in Redding, against the Red Hawks, due to New Year's Eve and CSUM's travel plans; this game will commence one hour earlier than the Cal Pac's designated 5:30 p.m. tip time for conference contests.
When members of the women's basketball team return to campus for its lone home game of the holiday break, it will face a UC Merced squad that is experiencing a tale of two seasons in Kellie Bernard's first year as its head coach.
Even though the Bobcats hold a 4-7 overall record, every win took place against a Cal Pac opponent. Since league play commenced, they are 4-2 and coming off a blowout victory that took place at home on December 20 against Pacific Union.
This game will feature the league's top two rebounders: UC Merced sophomore forward Damilola Sule's 12.8 per-game average is 0.4 of a rebound better than the Keelhaulers' Alicia Porter. However, CSUM's junior guard/forward leads all Cal Pac players in scoring at 29.3 points per game, nearly 10 full points better than Antelope Valley's Chinna Fair since the senior guard is ranked No. 2 with her 19.6 ppg figure.
With that result, UCM remained undefeated at home with a 4-0 record with each victory earned during conference play.
However, the Bobcats dropped all six games played on the road this season — a string of results that includes losses suffered in Southern California against Cal Pac foes Saint Katherine and Westcliff.
Starting with their game in Vallejo, UCM will enter a road-heavy portion of its schedule since six of nine games will take place outside of Merced.
After competing in its final home game of 2022, Cal Maritime will head to Simpson for a New Year's Eve showdown to end the calendar year. Victorious in five of its six league games played this season, the Red Hawks sit atop the Cal Pac standings and hold a 7-5 overall mark.
Simpson also won four of five played on its home floor; the James M. Grant Center is where its upcoming five-game homestand will take place, beginning with non-conference action, slated for December 30, against Menlo. Once that string of home games end, the Red Hawks will end its season series against CSUM on January 19, the first home event for the Keelhaulers in 2023.
