VALLEJO, Calif. – Layups from Kai Kraus and Alicia Porter, combined with the team's success on defense throughout the opening quarter of action in Wednesday's Cal Pac Conference home game helped Cal Maritime hold an early lead against UC Merced — the team's first game since December 8 when women's basketball defeated Pacific Union on its home court.
(Finals week and the holidays also played a key role in the Keelhaulers' mid-month hiatus).
Porter finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds, both game-high totals, and all seven players who saw action scored for the Keelhaulers, but it was the team's 24 turnovers that led to a 78-47 defeat since the Bobcats score 23 points off those miscues to pick up the win.
Due to U.S. Coast Guard exams taking place inside PEAC at the start of the calendar year, CSUM will now play its next six games on the road, starting with Saturday's 4:30 p.m. matchup at Simpson.
Other stops on this upcoming road swing include all three Arizona schools — Benedictine Mesa, Park Gilbert and Embry-Riddle — La Sierra and Antelope Valley in the first of two Southern California trips taking place throughout conference play.
Cal Maritime will head to Redding with a 1-7 overall and 1-3 Cal Pac record, UC Merced will continue its season at 5-7 and 5-2.
