VALLEJO, Calif. – After playing its last six straight games on the road, women's basketball will return to PEAC Main Gym on Thursday to host Simpson in the team's inaugural home event of 2023. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
That game will commence a home-heavy portion of the Keelhaulers' schedule, one that includes five of the next six games on CSUM's home court. The lone outlier within that block of action will take place on Saturday when women's basketball heads to UC Merced for this season's 5:30 p.m. series finale.
Once the Keelhaulers return home this weekend, four straight home games against Cal Pac competition — Pacific Union (Jan. 28), Embry-Riddle (Feb. 2), Benedictine Mesa (Feb. 3) and Park Gilbert (Feb. 5) — is the luxury everyone will fully enjoy after competing outside of Vallejo in recent weeks.
This week's schedule will begin against a Simpson squad that won three of its last four games and ends the month of January with four road games out of the next five slated throughout the next two weeks.
In addition to potentially splitting the season series, Thursday's home game also provides the Keelhaulers with an opportunity to play the role of spoiler since the Red Hawks trail Antelope Valley for first place by only one game in the league's standings.
UC Merced lost its last three games, and CSUM would love nothing more than to split that season's series by handing it a similar result in Saturday's road contest.
This matchup will feature two of the Cal Pac's top players when the Keelhaulers' Alicia Porter squares off against UCM's Damilola Sule.
Porter leads the conference with her 25.7 points per game average and ranks second at 11.9 rebounds per game, trailing only Sule and her 12.8 rpg figure. When they first met this season on December 28 inside PEAC Main Gym, Porter finished with five more boards than her counterpart (14-9) as each led their respective team with a game-high 18 points that night.
Kai Kraus is another Keelhauler who holds a No. 1 Cal Pac figure since her .412 shooting percentage from three is the highest among all league players following a weekend that saw her post a .750 clip from three during the first of the team's two trips to Southern California this season.
Women's basketball will head south for its final road trip of the year, one that includes stops at Westcliff and Saint Katherine on February 9 and 11.
