VALLEJO, Calif. — For the first time in 2024, basketball fans can cheer for the Keelhaulers on campus when women's basketball competes in its first home game since December 6 against Benedictine Mesa. Thursday's Cal Pac Conference matchup inside PEAC Main Gym will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The Keelhaulers' upcoming three-game homestand will continue Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. tilt versus Park Gilbert before concluding on January 25 against Simpson.
On the road since early December due to finals, CSUM's holiday break and U.S. Coast Guard exams, which took place on campus throughout the inaugural weeks of the new year, CSUM will compete on its home court following a pair of outstanding performances last week.
Against Pacific Union, women's basketball secured yet another rivalry victory by storming back in the fourth quarter to defeat the Pioneers. Last Thursday, Antelope Valley — it entered that contest atop the Cal Pac standings — truly escaped with a victory since a last-second three, which would have forced overtime, fell short.
In that game against UAV, Cal Maritime finished with higher shooting percentages across the board and won the rebound battle. However, the only element that allowed the Pioneers to survive the Keelhaulers' upset bid were turnovers: Cal Maritime committed 26 miscues that night compared to the Pioneers' 10 in a battle the Keelhaulers otherwise dominated from the opening tip until the final buzzer.
While unlikely to happen during this homestand, Alicia Porter has an opportunity to become the program's all-time scorer and needs another 187 points to match Lauren Westbrook's career-point record of 1,480.
Even though Benedictine Mesa enters Vallejo at .500 by splitting its 14 games played, the Redhawks earned all seven of their victories throughout Cal Pac play, including the last four played.
If Cal Maritime executes as a similar level as last week's pair of games, it faces a solid chance to secure the program's first head-to-head victory.
This week's home slate against Arizona-based competition continues Saturday against Park Gilbert, a team that sits third in the league's standings right behind the Redhawks.
The Keelhaulers will seek a similar result as their Northern California counterpart since the Buccaneers' won three of four games since the start of the new year. That lone loss during that block of action took place against Simpson at home — one of only two suffered by Park Gilbert against league teams.
The Buccaneers have not lost a conference game on the road this season and will visit Pacific Union Thursday night before visiting Vallejo.
