VALLEJO, Calif. – If you walk on campus, it will not take you long to feel a heightened sense of energy because students are focused on writing papers or studying for exams taking place during finals week. For members of Cal Maritime Women's Basketball, a welcome respite from exam prep is schedule for Wednesday when the team travels north on I-80 to face Jessup — now a Division-II program — in the first of a two-game road swing wrapping up the 2024 portion of the Keelhaulers' schedule.
Both road games are versus non-NAIA teams; on December 28, CSUM will hit the road and revisit the 80 Freeway when it heads to UC Davis for the final exhibition game of the season.
Even though the Keelhaulers' dropped their last game, the team battled back and nearly erased a 27-point deficit against Park Gilbert to force overtime.
No coach wants its team to lose, but that evening against the Buccaneers provided a glimpse of this team's potential to face any challenge and provide a stern test to any team that battles Cal Maritime this season. The Keelhaulers could not buy a basket in the second quarter that night; if the team made a handful of shots or drew more than six trips to the free throw line the entire game, that matchup against their former Cal Pac foe would have ended with a victory.
Jessup enters this meeting riding a three-game win streak: It started with a slim six-point win at Stanislaus State, continued at home with a blowout result against Simpson and continued last Saturday with a one-point victory at Westmont.
Cal Maritime will head to Rocklin looking to snap a five-game head-to-head slide and the first win on the Warriors' home court since February 6, 2016 — the last time CSUM defeated Jessup.
