VALLEJO, Calif. — With Cal Pac Conference play commencing January 16 at home against UC Merced, Cal Maritime will have three opportunities to shake off any rust accumulated from its recent holiday hiatus, and fine tune things on both sides of the ball, before facing the Bobcats when the Keelhaulers face rival Pacific Union and host Stanton on back-to-back nights.

Don't let Cal Maritime's overall record fool you because it is 2-4 against teams of a similar level since its other games were played against non-NAIA/NCAA opposition. And of those four losses to NAIA teams, two were versus nationally-ranked opponents.

Wednesday's 6 p.m. matchup in Angwin is a designated non-conference game even though both teams compete in the Cal Pac Conference. Official league matchups between the Keelhaulers and Pioneers are set for February 1 at PUC and Senior Night, February 22, in Vallejo.

With Stanton (an Anaheim-based institution) currently in the process of joining the Cal Pac Conference for starting with the 2025-26 season, this week's meetings ate the first in program history against the Elks.

Home games against Stanton will start at 5:30 p.m., inside PEAC Main Gym, Monday and Tuesday. Once that rare two-game series ends — it is uncommon to play two games against the same opponent in as many days, but a situation Coach Amen-Ra agreed to due to the sheer distance between the schools, and practicality in having an additional game before the start of the Keelhaulers' league schedule — one day will pass before CSUM's Cal Pac schedule tips-off at home.

UC Merced, the Keelhaulers' Cal Pac-opening opponent, will host Stanton on Friday before the Elks continue its Northern California road trip in the 707.

Cal Maritime is the fourth Cal Pac opponent on Stanton's schedule; it dropped last week's home games against La Sierra and Simpson. As of this release, only two games remain on the Elks' 2024-25 slate once it return home after playing CSUM: a home game against UC Merced and road game at Simpson.

A local rivalry will take undergo a unique twist when Cal Maritime faces Pacific Union in a non-conference clash for the first time in the program's recorded history.

Playing Cal Pac teams in non-conference events is nothing new to Pacific Union this year since the Keelhaulers are the second of three opponents for the Pioneers prior to starting their league schedule. In its previous game, PUC lost to Simpson on the road; following Wednesday's meeting, it will travel to La Sierra on Saturday before hosting Simpson in its Cal Pac opener.
