REDDING, Calif. – Trailing by one with 2:49 remaining in Wednesday's Cal Pac Conference game at the James M. Grant Center in Redding, Simpson scored six unanswered points over the next 90 seconds before Cal Maritime was forced to stop the clock by fouling, sending the Red Hawks to the line throughout the last 75 seconds of the game.
By making their free throws, Simpson pulled away in a back-and-forth battle between the league's top teams in a matchup that ended in the host's favor by a 77-71 score.
Four tied scores and five lead changes took place throughout the evening.
Even though this result fell in the Red Hawks' favor, the game will capture the attention of teams throughout the league since Cal Maritime led for 80 percent of the game until Simpson's late-game charge.
Aysia Santos and Tamana Sharifi each led the Keelhaulers with 19 points, Suraya Lloyd finished with a team-high nine rebounds in addition to scoring 10 points.
Women's basketball will now have two days to prepare for its next game, one that will take place inside PEAC Main Gym Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
