Women’s basketball rewrites records book in 88-49 victory
VALLEJO, Calif. - Upon first glance at the box score, Cal Maritime defeated Navajo Tech, 88-49, in Tuesday's non-conference game at PEAC Main Gym to sweep the mini homestand against the Skyhawks since these teams faced each other twice in as many days.
That box score is now a historical piece of the program's history for myriad reasons.
- The win is the team's seventh in a row, a new all-time record
- Senior guard Aysia Santos became the third player in the program's all-time history to score 40 or more points in a single game by finishing with 41, on 17 of 27 shooting; five of those baskets were from three
- With that eye-opening scoring performance, Santos now ranks fourth all-time with 807 points
- Senior forward Tamana Sharifi set an all-time single game rebound record by grabbing 28, two more than the previous record set by Alicia Porter in 2022
- Sharifi and Porter are the only two Keelhaulers in program history to notch 20 or more board in a single game.
With Tuesday's win, the Keelhaulers guarantees a.500 or better regular season record — there are still three games remaining — since the 2014-15 campaign. Depending on those results, and the results from games played throughout the upcoming Cal Pac Conference Women's Basketball Championship, this year's team possesses a realistic shot at becoming one of the most successful teams in Cal Maritime's history.
Entering Saturday's 3 p.m. non-conference game at UC Santa Cruz, this year's squad has 11 victories to its credit and crossed the double-digit victory threshold for the first time since 2014-15 with last night's win.
This year's Keelhaulers now have the following teams in its sight to become to set another all-time mark in a season that is already one for the history books: the 2014-15 squad won 13 games the 2011-12 team responsible for setting the program standard with 14 victories.
In addition to setting a new rebound record, Sharifi scored 22 points to become the second Keelhauler in the program's recorded history to finish with more than 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. That list now stands at two players with Porter becoming the first by finishing with 43 points and 26 rebounds on January 30, 2022, 26 and 22 and January 23, 2023 vs. Pacific Union.
By finishing with a career-high 10 assists Alanis Sulivan is now tied for sixth all-time for the most assists collected in a single game and needs just seven more to crack the single-season all-time top 10.
