Lady Keelhaulers celebrate program's first Senior Day
Women's Soccer's first Senior Day honored its foundation and founding members of the program on Saturday in Noelle Gomez, Monick Powers, Lea Schneiderman, Dru Daley, Sarah Rodriguez and Erika Duarte.
Cal Maritime's defense was solid early on in a very physical game against Sierra Nevada College. They played the passing lanes well to disrupt Sierra-Nevada's attack, especially Gomez and Powers, but Brittany Holloway and Katherine Kronheim again showed their improved play by slowing down the Eagles runs as well.
Vanessa Pena returned to goal for the Keelhaulers, and although Nathalie Calderon had shown a lot of improvement over the past few weeks and continued to display it when she came in for the second half, Pena's leadership and ability made a big difference for the Keelhaulers in the first half.
Annie Clements of Sierra Nevada was also very physical, as she was not afraid to throw some shoulders to take the ball away from the Keelhaulers. Clements scored the first goal of the game with an assist from Savanna Watson in the 24th minute.
Even though the Keelhaulers were unable to get that first win on Senior Day, Head Coach Emily Scheese
"It was a really special day to honor the first seniors of the program," Scheese said. "They were integral in making this season happen and hopefully we carry on a long tradition of them returning to campus and seeing them in our alumni games. I especially can't say enough about Mo and Noelle and their role in getting the program started."
When Powers was asked to reflect on her place in the Cal Maritime Women's Socer history, she joked, "Well I hope to see my picture hanging in the administration building some day. It's definitely crazy to think about it. When we were freshman we never thought we'd get this, and I'm pretty happy to be playing competitively here."
The Lady Keelhaulers will have one more game at Bodnar Field, as they will finish the season with an exhibition game against Bethesda University on November 1 at 5 p.m.
