Get to know Women's Soccer keeper Maddy Dack
The Women's Soccer Team has found their goalkeeper for the next few years in sophomore Maddy Dack. She's funny, a leader, humble, and strives to do better for not only herself but for others too.
The Brea, Calif. native has cemented herself at Cal Maritime, getting involved in more than just sports while becoming a popular face around campus.
You can add record-setter in numerous categories in Women's Soccer, Cadet of the Month, and Student-Athlete Council representative to her resume and it's only the beginning of year two of her college career.
"I've loved it so far," said the sophomore being asked what drew her to Cal Maritime. "This is the best school in my opinion, and I've had the most fun sports-wise, academics-wise, meeting people, it's just been an overall great experience."
With COVID circumstances and all, Dack has still managed to make an impact under these strange times becoming the August Cadet of the Month. She spent time as an RHO, a residence hall officer, training others how to become one as well as helping with orientation week for the freshman showing them how formation works and walking them around campus in person and over zoom for a tour and to see where their classes are.
The NAIA leader in saves last season has also joined the Cal Pac Student-Athlete Council, helping better the communication between students, athletes, and the school.
"The student-athlete council is not well known here at Cal Maritime's campus but we're growing significantly or at least I think we're about to," says Dack. "We're trying to get more involved in the triad, which is the core, housing, and student body. We meet at least once a month to talk about any issues that might be going on if you're missing gear, if your dining hall is closing before you get out of practice, it's basically communication between students, athletes, and the school. Just to make sure everyone is not missing out on anything, they're getting the help they need because being a student-athlete at this school can definitely be challenging, I know firsthand."
After her first full season as the Women's Soccer Goalkeeper, Dack touched on the biggest adjustment between high school and her first season at the collegiate level and the physical ability one must have in order to keep up.
"As a brand-new program, it was a lot of work on the defensive half, to say the least, and as a goalkeeper, I was always getting ready, I could never be fit enough for this season," Dack said. "I tried my best but I always needed to catch up. It was a great experience, I learned so much from getting my reactions to skyrocketed, my saves skyrocketed so it's been a crazy experience."
The Women's Soccer season is tentatively scheduled to start sometime in March. Keep up to date via gokeelhaulers.com for the latest news and updates on the season.
