VALLEJO, Calif. – The season within a season starts Saturday night for Cal Maritime when the Simpson Red Hawks visit Bodnar Field for the Keelhaulers' Cal Pac Conference opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
This weekend's matchup also marks the midpoint of the team's season-opening homestand, one that began with a pair of challenging non-conference games against Division II opposition.
Following Saturday's clash against Simpson, Cal Maritime will host Westcliff and Stanton next Friday and Sunday before hitting the road for its next four games.
Unlike Cal Maritime, a team that did not report for its inaugural set of practices until the end of August, due to students' hours at sea to fulfill respective requirements for their majors throughout the summer, Simpson started playing games in early August with a pair of scrimmages.
Compared to the Keelhaulers' two official contests, the Red Hawks already played three times as many official games, including their inaugural league event last Sunday against Pacific Union — a game that ended in Simpson's favor by a 1-0 score.
That result snapped a four-game skid that included three losses and a tie against a Bushnell squad that netted its equalizer seven minutes into the second half.
Prior to its home result versus the Pioneers, Simpson's last win took place in its late August season opener.
These teams will complete the season series on Thursday, October 16 in Redding with a 10 a.m. morning matchup.
