VALLEJO, Calif. – Entering the weekend rising an eight-game win streak, Cal Maritime finished fifth in the Sierra Pacific Division's playoff tournament after falling to Chico State, 10-6, at PEAC Pool on Sunday.
Even though the visiting Wildcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead by recorded every goal scored throughout the opening period, Meghan Abbott put the Keelhaulers on the scoreboard early in the second quarter by recording the first of her three goals recorded throughout the match.
Abbott also found the back of the cage in the third and fourth periods.
Anjali Sharma scored Cal Maritime's second goal before halftime; once action resumed, Olivia Larwood also scored in the third period with Ryan Wallace entering the scoresheet shortly thereafter.
But the Wildcats' early lead held throughout the morning as they recorded the victory to secure a berth in the tournament's third place game.
Cate Anderson collected four of her eight saves in the second period.
Off the next couple weeks, Cal Maritime will return to PEAC Pool to host the NAIA Finals, a two-day playoff tournament that commences on April 13.
Cal ended its weekend in third place after defeating Chico State, 5-3; UC Davis (A) topped UC Santa Cruz (A), 11-10 in double overtime, to earn the league's postseason title and automatic berth in the national championship tournament.
