Women's Cross Country finishes 2018 season strong

The Women's Cross Country team completed their 2018 season Monday at the California Pacific Conference Championships held at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif. Sophomore Lauren Silva finished first for the Keelhaulers and 24th overall with a time of 21:55.

Led by four-year runner and captain, Evelyn Esparza, the Keelhaulers finished 8th out of the 12-team conference. Silva finished 1st for the Keelhaulers in all five races Cal Maritime entered this season.

Senior Gwyn Curry crossed the finish line 2nd for the Keelhaulers with a time of 23:51 and Esparza finished 3rd among Cal Maritime runners with a time of 25:16. First year runners Starr Jones and Jessica Suarez finished 4th and 5th respectively. Head coach Jeff Ward continues to see growth and the arrow trending upward

"This unit showed a ton of heart this year, and their hard work paid off. We will continue to work to improve this off season and come back stronger next year," Ward said.

Two Keelhaulers finished their collegiate careers on Monday. Senior captain, Esparza, a business major from Vallejo, Calif., has shown tremendous leadership during her two seasons as team captain. Curry, a double major studying Global Studies and Marine Transportation from San Diego, has demonstrated very well how time management and hard work can pay off.

"We have such a great group of seniors this year," Ward commented. "I believe their influence on this team will be felt for many years to come."
