Keelhaulers win third straight by topping local Division II team
VALLEJO, Calif. – Even though the final score will not affect Cal Maritime's overall record since it was an exhibition contest (this is a countable game for its opponent), the Keelhaulers are officially on a roll since they ended their four-game homestand with their third straight victory, thanks to Tuesday night's 72-67 result against Division II foe Holy Names.
Trailing by three early in the second half, a three from Amil Fields pulled the Keelhaulers even with the Hawks at 42 apiece. Following one made Holy Names free throw, another three, this time from Cetrick Yeanay, gave the Keelhaulers a 45-43 advantage.
The back-and-forth battle continued with another tied score, following a HNU basket, but Cal Maritime responded with five straight points, thanks to a jumper from Divine Nwoko and another three from Fields, and never looked back.
Even though the Keelhaulers led for the final 14-plus minutes of the game, Holy Names did face an opportunity to tie the score in the final seconds. As was the case the entire evening, Cal Maritime's defense made another clutch stop when Fields blocked Edward Gray's three-point attempt.
By scoring the game's final points with his coast-to-coast layup Yeanay finished with 20 on 8 of 12 shooting from the floor; half of his field goals were hit from three. Miles Pennington also enjoyed a strong shooting performance against the Hawks as he shot 7-for-15 overall and finished with 15 points.
Also turning in an attention-grabbing performance off the bench was Fields, who posted a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds — nearly one-third of his team's overall total (34).
The Keelhaulers will now shift their attention from the court to the classroom with final exams taking place during their two-week hiatus. Cal Maritime's next game is slated for December 30 when it heads to Lancaster, California, to face West Coast Baptist in the team's penultimate non-conference game of the season.
