VALLEJO, Calif. – Saturday's game is an exciting, yet bittersweet occasion for Cal Maritime's men's basketball program: This is the final time that seniors Trey Porter and Cetrick Yeanay will compete inside PEAC Main Gym as a cadet-athlete since this weekend marks the Keelhaulers' final home game of the season.
Saturday's 8:30 p.m. home Cal Pac contest also provides an exciting opportunity for the program since it is hosting rival Pacific Union and battling for one of six coveted spots and the league's postseason tournament, hosted by Antelope Valley from February 27-March 1.
Basketball fans are encouraged to secure their seats inside PEAC Main Gym by 8 p.m. to help the program honor Porter and Yeanay in a pregame Senior Night ceremony.
In the opening game of this season's series, Cal Maritime defeated the Pioneers by an 87-84 score, in double overtime, by erasing a six-point deficit in the final 66 seconds of regulations, and pulling away in the second extra session by outscoring host PUC by three.
With that result, Cal Maritime collected victories in 23 of the last 30, six of the last eight and four straight overall head-to-head games against the Pioneers. This season's road result also led to the Keelhaulers' third win in the last four played in Angwin and both previously played meetings during the 2021-22 season.
In last November's designated non-conference clash, which took place inside PEAC Main Gym the Keelhaulers led by six at the break, scored the first five points of the second half and maintained that double-digit advantage for the rest of the night to help the team earn its first win of the season, which doubled as the inaugural victory of head coach Tim Bross' Cal Maritime tenure.
Cal Maritime also earned victories in nine of the last 11 games vs. the Pioneers that took place on its home court.
Saturday's contest marks the start of Pacific Union's season-ending five-game road swing, which includes stops at UC Merced, Antelope Valley, Saint Katherine and La Sierra.
The Keelhaulers will open a season-ending trip of its own, beginning with Wednesday's game at Simpson, followed by trips to La Sierra and Antelope Valley on February 19 and 21, respectively.
