Pennington sets two new career highs; Keelhaulers edged by one at Menlo
ATHERTON, Calif. – Trailing by five with just over two minutes remaining in Saturday's non-conference game at Haynes-Prim Pavilion, Lee Jones Jr. trimmed the Keelhaulers' deficit to a single possession after sinking back-to-back free throws, followed by another made free throw from Justice Cole to pull Cal Maritime within two of Menlo, with 27 seconds remaining.
Following a CSUM foul the Oaks' Ryan Patrick hit two shots from the stripe to double his team's lead back to four, followed by a three-point play from Jones Jr. 14 seconds later to pull within one. That solitary point served as the home team's final margin of victory after Cal Maritime's shot at the buzzer did not fall, which allowed Menlo to escape with a 79-78 victory.
With Saturday's result, CSUM is now 0-4 with Menlo improving to 5-1 after winning its third straight.
Including Jones Jr., who finished with 17 points and a game-high seven assists, three Keelhaulers scored double figures in their series finale vs. the Oaks. By recording a career-high four field goals from three and hitting 5 of 6 from the line, Miles Pennington finished with a game-high 23 points, another new career best.
Braxton Adderly sank two of his four baskets from three and ended his day with 10 points by shooting 4-for-6 overall.
Cal Maritime's next game will take place inside PEAC Main Gym on Wednesday, November 16, in the back-half of a home doubleheader, that is slated to start at 7:30 p.m. against UC Santa Cruz.
