Five finish in double figures for Cal Maritime in Tuesday’s game versus Southern Oregon

VALLEJO, Calif. – Led by senior guard Braxton Adderly and his career-high 17 points, on 6 of 10 shooting overall, five Keelhaulers scored double figures in Tuesday's non-conference game at PEAC Main Gym. Justice Cole finished one point shy of matching his teammate's total; Miles Pennington and Lee Jones Jr. each ended their afternoon with 15 points and Divine Nwoko added another 11.

Cal Maritime shot 46 percent from the floor and only committed nine turnovers, but Southern Oregon's 11 baskets from three became the difference in this matchup as the visiting Raiders slipped past the Keelhaulers to record an 89-85 victory.

Led by Cole's 14 rebounds — he posted his first double-double as a Keelhauler and ended his day two boards shy of matching a career high set in his team's previous game vs. William Jessup — Cal Maritime dominated the glass by a 44-33 overall and 18-8 margin on offense. Even though defensive rebound totals were nearly split evenly, CSUM finished with one more (26-25); winning the battle of the boards led to 54 of its points scored in the paint — 12 more than its opponent.

But the Raiders sank 11 field goals from three, compared to the Keelhaulers' two, which helped them maintain a cushion throughout the second half, even though Cal Maritime out-scored SOU by two in the second half.

Three-point shooting allowed Southern Oregon to take a game-high 14-point lead with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game, but the Keelhaulers' tenacity down low turned that into a two-possession margin, or less, throughout the final minutes of action.

Off for the holidays, men's basketball will return to PEAC Main Gym for its final home game of 2022 when UC Merced visits Vallejo for a 7:30 p.m. Cal Pac contest next Wednesday, December 28. Cal Maritime will return to conference play with a 3-6 overall record and look to remain atop the league's standings, thanks to its undefeated 3-0 mark against conference opponents.

Southern Oregon will continue its season with a 7-4 overall record.
