VALLEJO, Calif. - After traveling approximately 5,960 miles combined throughout its first three games of the season, Cal Maritime's cross-campus commute to Wednesday's home opener is slightly easier to manage and handle, by comparison, with men's basketball squaring off against Jessup (formerly known as William Jessup) in Wednesday's 6 p.m. non-conference game.
This matchup will commence a home-heavy portion of the team's schedule that includes four of five taking place inside PEAC Main Gym.
The lone road game within that block of action will take CSUM to Southern Oregon on November 22; taking place before that trip is next Thursday's home contest (and this season's series finale) versus Menlo.
Once the Keelhaulers return from Oregon, it will open Cal Pac Conference play on November 30 against Westcliff and continue its three-game homestand on December 2 and 6 versus Saint Katherine and UC Merced.
Wednesday's event marks the home debut for six Keelhaulers — DeAndre Minor, Illyaas Rafiq, Chris Herrera, Daniel Andreyev, Aidan Kwan and Jake Matteson — in addition to Lucky Hampton's return after spending last season at Contra Costa College.
Even though Cal Maritime will seek its first win of the season in front of its home fans, two of its three previously played games took place against Alaska Anchorage, a Division II program.
If its first batch of games offer a snapshot of the rest of the season, Cal Maritime will give opponents fits due to its balanced attack since a different player led the team in scoring each game.
In their season opener at Menlo, Lunden Taylor led a trio of double-digit scorers with 18 points; Everett Perrot set a new career high (21 pts.) in his team's first matchup against the Seawolves; DeAndre Minor showcased his scoring prowess the following day when he finished with a team-high 14 on 6 of 9 shooting.
