Cal Maritime sweeps season series vs. Pacific Union
VALLEJO, Calif. – Trailing 15-6 early in the first half of Tuesday's Cal Pac Conference game at PEAC Main Gym, Alex Maze hit three shots from three, and Jake Matteson hit another from distance to give Cal Maritime its first lead of the night at 15-14.
After trading free throws, Daniel Andreyev's layup gave the Keelhaulers a 20-18 lead, with just under 12 minutes remaining in the opening half, and CSUM never trailed for the rest of the night since men's basketball shot 54 percent from the floor and hit 44 percent of its threes to pull away and defeat Pacific Union, 85-72, in the team's final home game of the 2023-24 season.
Combined with its mid-January road result, CSUM swept its league rivals for the fourth consecutive season.
In addition to scoring 40 of its points in the paint, Cal Maritime dominated the boards by outrebounding the Pioneers by 11 overall and 16 on the defensive glass.
Lucky Hampton broke the 20-point threshold for the third game in a row by finishing with a team-high 23 by shooting 6-for-7 overall, 2-for-3 from behind the arc and 9-for-10 at the free throw line.
Maze and Andreyev also added 13 points apiece with the former also posting a team-high eight rebounds.
In addition to nailing more than half their shots as a team, the Keelhaulers held PUC to 36 percent shooting overall and limited the Pioneers to 11 of 32 shooting from three.
Cal Maritime's lone game of the weekend will take place at Antelope Valley on Saturday, tipoff from the Pioneer Event Center is set for 4 p.m.
