VALLEJO, Calif. — Cal Maritime will take a brief break from conference play when Nelson University-Arizona visits PEAC Main Gym for Thursday night's 6 p.m. matchup but return to action two days later when it drives up the hill to Angwin for the first of two rivalry games against Pacific Union.
Tipoff inside Covered Wagon is set for 8 p.m. The Pioneers will head to Vallejo for the return game on February 22 — CSUM's Senior Day game.
In their final game before Christmas, the Keelhaulers visited Phoenix to face Nelson in a game the Warriors won, 123-89. Cal Maritime would like nothing more than to avenge that result in the inaugural meeting between the two in Nelson's first-ever visit to PEAC Main Gym.
The Warriors will visit Vallejo with victories in two of their last three games and play the second of three contests on their current Northern California trip — one that started Tuesday night at Simpson and ends Friday at Pacific Union.
Speaking of Pacific Union, that is where the Keelhaulers will end their weekend and wrap-up the first round of Cal Pac Conference games. Even though that is the second game in three days for CSUM, standard scheduling during one's conference schedule, PUC will host their rivals in the second game of a back-to-back, giving Cal Maritime a slight edge going into this event.
The Pioneers are hosting the Keelhaulers in the second of a three-game homestand after playing three straight Cal Pac games on the road. Pacific Union captured a home win vs. Simpson prior to that three-game slide and face a similar situation as Cal Maritime.
As is the case with Cal Maritime, four of PUC's last six league games will take place at home, giving both teams an edge throughout the second round of their respective Cal Pac slate (and battle for one of four spots in the Cal Pac's year-end postseason tournament).
Cal Maritime won 10 of the last 12 played versus the Pioneers and hold a five-game win streak inside Covered Wagon.
