VALLEJO, Calif. — After dropping last Saturday's thrilling home opener vs. Fresno State by a 29-24 score, Cal Maritime will return to action on Saturday when it heads to San Jose to face the Spartans in its first road game of the season. This matchup at San José State is slated for 1 p.m.
This is the second of five games, in as many weeks, for a Keelhauler squad that will return to Bodnar Field next Saturday to host Humboldt State at 1 p.m. Even though the team's attention is squarely focused on the Spartans, Keelhauler rugby fans also have an eye on the team's upcoming schedule since Cal Maritime will host the Pacific Western Conference Championships on Nov. 20 and 21. With just a few weeks separating this weekend's road trip and the postseason, every game played throughout that timespan is an important one for Cal Maritime.
Last weekend's home game, the first official rugby event to take place on campus since the spring of 2019, featured a back-and-forth battle that saw the Keelhaulers hold a two-point lead heading into the final portion of their matchup against Fresno State. Said head coach Steve Hiatt afterwards, ""we improved in all facets of the game, compared to our home exhibition vs. Berkeley Men's RFC, but we did not improve as much as we should have to win this game."
Following a tough battle against the Bulldogs, and a spirited week of practices, Cal Maritime is eager to return to the field and collect its first victory of the season before returning home next weekend to host the Lumberjacks.
