Cal Maritime falls in conference opener to Humboldt State
VALLEJO, Calif. - The Cal Maritime rugby team hosted its first Pacific Western Conference tilt of the 2021 season against Humboldt State on Saturday afternoon at Bodnar Field.
Despite dominating possession the first 10 minutes and keeping the ball in the Jacks' half, the Keelhaulers (1-2) eventually fell 31-0 to the visiting squad.
HSU's Kevin Arias registered two tries and Dante Capellano accounted for nine total points on a try and two conversions.
Cal Maritime's Josh Bates nearly put the Keelhaulers on the board in the second half with a quick sprint down the right flank, but the Jacks were able to tackle him at the goal line and hold defensively.
Andrew Cavinta tried his luck on the right side in the waning moments of the game. He nearly got across the line before attempting to find Bates with a pitch to the right, but the ball bounced into touch.
The Keelhaulers return to play on Saturday, November 6 at Cal State Monterey Bay. The next home match is set for Friday, November 12 at 7 p.m. against Sonoma State.
