Keelhaulers Lose Soccer Home Opener to Bethany
The Cal Maritime soccer team opened its soccer season with a disappointing 3-1loss to Bethany University.
Maritime started the stronger side, and moved the ball well during the opening minutes of play, their aggression paying off when Thomas Hernandez slotted home a pass from David Tucker 10 minutes into the game.
With the Keelhaulers up, Bethany started to press forward and were soon rewarded with a penalty for a hand ball on Dan Lowry. The penalty was then saved by Will Akers; but somehow the linesman judged the goalkeeper to have moved before the kick was taken, the resulting re-kick found the net and the score was tied at 1-1, at the 16 minute mark.
The game was played under very hot conditions at Skypark Field in Scotts Valley, California, and CMA started to fatigue. Bethany scored their second goal with less than a minute left in the half.
Bethany got the second half under way and appeared to get more and more possession as the half continued. The heat and the constant Bethany attack finally resulted in a third goal for the host around the 80 minute of the contest.
The Keelhaulers continue their season when the host the Menlo Oaks at Bodnar field this Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
