Simpson Defeats Maritime During Homecoming Festivities
Simpson Defeat Maritime
Playing in front of a large homecoming crowd, the visiting Red Hawks of Simpson University defeated Cal Maritime 3-0, handing the Keelhaulers their 5th conference loss of the season.
Maritime attacked with vigor in the opening 30 minutes and it appeared that it would only be a matter of time before the hosts found a break through the Simpson defense. Maritime had most of the possession, pressing for an opening goal; however it was Simpson who found the net on their first shot 32 minutes into the game.
This goal seemed to unsettle the host side and Simpson added another goal on their second attempt of the game with nine minutes left in the half. The first half saw many opportunities for Maritime to score, George Dick hit the post, Dan Milward, Vincent Parker and Collin McCarthy all saw good efforts just stray off target. The shot total for the first half was Maritime 7, Simpson 2
The second half was much like the first with Cal Maritime having more of the ball and better scoring chances, with Dan Lowry hitting the bar twice. Simpson again found success when Michael Guzman converted a penalty kick, 28 minutes into the second half. Nic Anderson played perhaps his best game as a Keelhauler continually frustrating the Red Hawks with a strong defensive performance.
Cal Maritime led in total shots, shots on goal, corners and time of possession, but Simpson led in the only stat that counts, grinding out a gritty 3-0 win.
