Maritime Pays Penalties for Costly Mistakes

The Menlo Oaks defeated Cal Maritime 3-0 Saturday afternoon handing the Keelhaulers their second consecutive loss by the same score.

Both Maritime and Menlo had good moments during the opening minutes, but neither side was able to create any real scoring chances, then in the 38 minute, goalkeeper Will Akers mistimed a tackle in the box and Menlo was awarded a penalty kick. Hugo Conchas converted the penalty only to have it disallowed for a Menlo infraction, his re-take again found the net and the hosts were up 1-0 going into the break.

The second half saw Menlo pressing for another goal, and then 18 minutes after the restart, Dan Lowery received his second yellow card for bringing down a Menlo midfielder inside area. Hugo Conchas kept his nerve and converted his second spot kick of the game, this time getting one past goalie Kyle Carpenter.

Down to ten men Maritime continued to battle, but Menlo's defense was too organized and kept the Keelhaulers at bay. Enrique Fernandez found the net for the host's third goal at the 68 minute mark and the game was put out of reach for Maritime.

The Cal Maritime soccer team next play undefeated and Cal Pac leading Holy Names on Tuesday night at Bodnar field, kick off scheduled for 6 PM
