Maritime Sunk in Double OT
Playing their last home game of the season Cal Maritime lost to the Warriors of William Jessup 3-2 Saturday night.
The Keelhaulers started the game well, enjoying more possession and creating more chances during the opening minutes of the half. This good play was rewarded midway through the half when a long shot by Nic Anderson was spoiled by Warrior goal keeper Jeff Dunn; Dan Milward was quickest to the loose ball and smashed it into the back of the net for a well deserved 1-0 lead.
Maritime continued to play up-tempo soccer and had several good chances to increase their leadwith bothforward George Dick and midfielder Vincent Parker having good looks at goal. The first half ended withMaritime the better side and holding a 1-0 advantage.
William Jessup began the second half with more urgency, but it was the host who scored next when the Keelhaulers were awarded a penalty for an infraction inside the area. David Tucker calmly converted the spot kick and the CMA wasup 2-0 with 40 minutes remaining.
This second goal clearly had the visitors rattled, the momentum was with Maritime and it looked like the hosts might add a third, but after a rocky 10 minute spell, William Jessup managed to regain their composure and were rewarded with a goal with 20 minutes left to play.
At 2-1, the visitors still had a lot of work to do to get back into the game, but the momentum had shifted to the Warriors, Maritime was on the back foot, and with 5 minutes to go Jessup found the net and tied the score.
A big blow for Maritime occurred in the first overtime period when central defender Sam Meade came off with an injury, this proved costly when Maritime's other center back, Gregg Bennett was red carded for bringing down a Warrior forward just outside the box with 10 minutes left to play. With a make shift back line and Maritime down to ten men, the host tried bravely to preserve the tie, but Jessup would find the winner with less than four minutes left in the second overtime period.
Maritime will next play on the road against Simpson University on Wednesday afternoon, and will look to put this tough loss behind them.
