Men’s soccer defeats Providence Christian, 2-0, in 2022's final road game

IRWINDALE, Calif. — Providence Christian may have out-shot Cal Maritime by a 9-7 margin in Saturday's game at Kara Youth League Facility in Irwindale, but the Keelhaulers led where it counted the most, thanks to goals from Guillermo Cordoba in the 56th minute and Nic Kashiwai in the 70th, which led to a 2-0 victory in the team's final road game of 2022.

Cal Maritime's suffocating defense only allowed two shots on goal all day long, prevented the host Sea Beggars from even creating a dangerous scoring opportunity and did an outstanding job protecting its lead once Ronald Squier set up Cordoba's second goal of the season.

Even through the freshman midfielder's strike provided all the offense the Keelhaulers needed to earn their first win of the season, Kashiwai created extra breathing room by recording his team-high fourth goal with just over 20 minutes remaining.

The pair were brutally efficient on offense since both of Kashiwai's attempts, and Cordoba's lone shot were all on goal.

Cal Maritime goalkeeper Nathan Witte finished with two wins to earn his first career shutout victory.

Men's soccer will end the season with three home games in five days, starting with Tuesday's 7 p.m. non-conference finale against Bethesda. After Simpson visits Vallejo on Thursday for a 5 p.m. Cal Pac Conference contest, the Keelhaulers will face UC Merced in next Saturday's (Oct. 29) Senior Day game.

Kickoff for that matchup against the Bobcats is slated for 3:30 p.m.
