VALLEJO, Calif. – The first weekend Cal Pac road trip of the season will take men's soccer to Prescott, Arizona, and Irvine, California, when it squares off against Embry-Riddle and Westcliff on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Kickoff for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
Don't let the Keelhaulers' record fool you: They controlled end-to-end action at Simpson and only saw the Red Hawks score their goals off set pieces; coming off last weekend's Cal Pac home opener, an unfortunate deflection on a clearance within their own 18-yard box led to a 1v1 opportunity for Soka who happened to have a player in the right place at the right time.
If you watched CSUM in action, you know they are a highly-competitive team that is still catching up to their opponents in one major regard: Compared to other Cal Pac teams that reported to campus and began preseason training and conditioning at the start of August, Cal Maritime returned to campus during the final week of the month and could not hold official preseason workouts until classes started.
The records of teams playing this weekend reflect CSUM's unique situation since both of its opponents played twice as many official matches by comparison (or more if you included Westcliff's exhibition).
Men's soccer's weekend will commence in Prescott in the back-half of the Eagles' four-match homestand. Including last week's games versus Saint Katherine and Providence Christian (they outscored their opponents by a combined 15-0 margin), ERAU won four of its last five played and the last three straight.
Even though it split games played last week — a 4-3 victory took place at Simpson two days after suffering a 4-2 loss, its first of the year, at UC Merced — Westcliff still occupied a place in the NAIA's latest national poll by receiving votes.
That result against the Bobcats snapped a season-opening seven-game win streak.
Buoyed by a 9-0 win against Stanton University, a team the Keelhaulers will host in the final weeks of the season, combined with an 8-0 shutout at Life Pacific, the Warriors scored 34 goals throughout their first eight games of the year — a league-high total that is four more than second-ranked Embry-Riddle.
There is no place like home, and that is where men's soccer will spend the following two weeks once it returns from its Arizona-Southern California road swing with upcoming games at Bodnar Field versus Benedictine Mesa (Sept. 29), Park Gilbert (Oct. 1) and Providence Christian (Oct. 5).
Sandwiched between inaugural October home contests is a road game that will still keep the Keelhaulers local since they will head to UC Santa Cruz on October 3.
