Keelhaulers sweep Sunday’s slate
VALLEJO, Calif – Fans of Cal Maritime men's water polo have every reason to feel encouraged following the team's season-opening tournament, the Keelhauler Classic, which concluded on Sunday at PEAC Pool. After dropping the first two games of the season by one goal, including a game that needed triple overtime to determine a winner, the Keelhaulers bounced back on Sunday by earning a pair of blowout victories: an 18-9 result over San José State and an 18-5 win versus UC Merced.
With the first weekend of the 2022 season now official, Cal Maritime will continue its season with a 2-2 overall record.
The Keelhaulers began the day by scoring the first two goals of their game against SJSU, and seven of the first nine to take a 7-2 lead through one period.
Led by Ian Diamond with six, eight different players found the back of the cage against the Spartans.
Even though San José State pulled within three at one point of the match, when it scored the first goal after halftime to trim CSUM's lead to three, the Keelhaulers responded by scoring the next three goals by either team, and three of the first four goals recorded in the final quarter, to pull away and earn their first victory of the season.
Momentum from that game carried over to the Keelhauler Classic's finale with the host school holding a 4-1 lead entering the second quarter of its match against UC Merced. That cushion quickly grew to 11 at halftime since Cal Maritime was responsible for all eight goals scored in the second period.
As was the case earlier in the day, Diamond was responsible for a team-high four goals scored against the Bobcats. In the tournament's final game, 11 players were collectively responsible for the Keelhaulers' offense.
Following next week's hiatus, men's water polo will return to action on October 15 when it heads to the coast to face Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, the host Banana Slugs and Pacific at the UC Santa Cruz Tournament.
