VALLEJO, Calif. – A championship and automatic bid for the national postseason tournament are at stake this weekend when the Sierra Pacific Conference's eight teams visit PEAC Pool for this season's 2022 league playoffs.
With victories in five of its last six matches, Cal Maritime will enter this weekend's tournament with momentum, and the added advantage of competing at its home facility. Even though the Keelhaulers must focus on one game at a time, they would love nothing more than to replicate last year's run, one that ended with a berth in the title match against eventual champion Cal.
Earlier this season, CSUM doubled up on San José State (18-9), its first opponent of the Championship. Past results bode well for men's water polo since its final game on Saturday will take place against top-ranked Chico State or Cal State Monterey Bay, two opponents Cal Maritime defeated last weekend when the program stepped up to host the Fall Invitational after UC Santa Cruz was forced to cancel its season.
The two teams that defeated Cal Maritime in 2022, UC Davis and Cal, comprise half of the event's other bracket. Of its three losses, a one-goal margin was the difference in a game against the Aggies and Golden Bears, in addition to Cal defeating CSUM last weekend by two.
Even though teams are seeded based on their regular season finish, numerous teams possess a realistic chance of leaving PEAC Pool on Sunday with a title and the opportunity to continue their season.
