VALLEJO, Calif. – San Jose State held a 6-2 lead at one point of Saturday morning's opening round match of the Sierra Pacific Division Tournament, but starting with goals from Connor Wadhams and Carlo Ferreira in the final minutes of the second quarter, Cal Maritime stormed back to take an 8-7 lead with 3:58 remaining in the third period.
From that point on, the Keelhaulers never trailed as they saw their lead bounce from two goals to one, back to a pair throughout the rest of the game — one that ended in a 14-13 victory.
Led by Wadhams with a team-high four, Ethan Osorio and Kevin Kraatz each scored a hat trick against the Spartans. Responsible for the rest of CSUM's offense were Osorio with a pair of his own, and one apiece from Austin Hochadel and Marcos Ortega.
By winning that match, Cal Maritime earned a rematch against Cal, a familiar battle since these teams competed for the Sierra Pacific Division's postseason championship in each of the last two years.
As was the case in previous head-to-head matchups vs. the Golden Bears, water polo fans were treated to a thriller from the opening whistle, until the final buzzer, as this back-and-forth battle led to a 9-9 tie entering the final minutes of the match.
That deadlock snapped for good when the Golden Bears netted the game winner with 1:01 in regulation to edge the Keelhaulers, 10-9.
With that result against Cal, Cal Maritime will battle Stanford for third place in Sunday's 10:10 a.m. game.
