SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Cal Maritime opened its Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference weekend at Santa Barbara Harbor by finishing fifth in the Carter Ford PCCSC Open Team Championship before securing sixth, among a field of 17 conference teams, during the two-day Mark Healy PCCSC Open Conference Championship, with both dinghy events hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
During Friday's Open Team Race competition, the Keelhaulers secured head-to-head victories versus Washington, Cal, San Diego State, Cal Poly and UC San Diego to post a 5-4 overall record and finish in the upper half of the 10-team field.
By winning all 14 of its races, Stanford earned the automatic berth at the ICSA Team Race National Championship.
During the first of the Open Conference Championship's two days, only two races within each of the two divisions took place because of a late report time, due to dismal conditions. Thanks to fourth and fifth-place finishes on Saturday in the B Division, Cal Maritime secured fifth overall entering the final set of races.
Of the five rounds that took place throughout Sunday, the Keelhaulers' best finishes also took place in the B Division when that crew secured fifth in Championship's final two races.
When Cal Maritime returns to Vallejo, it will have five full days to prepare for its second home regatta within the last three weeks as hosts of the Keelhauler Open. This event is free to watch; spectators can view all races anywhere along lower campus' waterfront since officials will set the course at Morrow Cove.
